Once again, I am proud to welcome you to the City of Jersey City’s supplement in NJBIZ.
These are extraordinary times. Skyrocketing jobless rates, an unending stream of real estate foreclosures, credit that is seemingly trapped beneath layers of ice: yes, the country is suffering from a severe case of economic flu. Few can argue, however, that these ugly times had a much lovelier alter image in the past decade during an era of great—if not extraordinary—expansion and transaction. Money flowed, businesses grew exponentially and people were living beyond their means. These were heady times for dealmakers.
On June 6, 1988, business people in Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties were greeted at their desks by the debut issue of NJBIZ (then called Business for Central New Jersey), with a headline that proclaimed “The Birth of Nouvelle New Jersey.”
