Camden-based American Water launched its charitable arm in 2010 to support the communities it serves.
In that vein, the American Water Charitable Foundation announced Aug. 23 that it had awarded a total of $1.5 million to 36 organizations in 12 states, including New Jersey, as part of its 2022 Water and Environment grant program.
The New Jersey recipients are:
- Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, which received $20,000 to support an environmental science afterschool program for Camden City girls ages 9 through 11.
- Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge, which received $10,000 to support water resource education materials and models for New Jersey youth.
Participating in an Aug. 23 press conference to celebrate the awards were Carrie Williams, president of the foundation; Dena Herrin, executive director, Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey; Darren Spielman, executive director of Pennsylvania Resources Council; Mike O’Malley, executive director, Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge; Erin Kiefer-Rounds, director of education, Woodford Cedar Run; and a unique guest — “wildlife ambassador” Aldora, a red-tailed hawk.
“The American Water Charitable Foundation is pleased to partner with organizations across American Water’s footprint to provide equitable and accessible projects and programs focused on clean water, conservation, environmental education and water-based recreation,” Williams said in a statement. “The Water and the Environment grant program gives us the opportunity to continue to focus on our core passion of water, while engaging community members in learning how every drop counts.”
The grant is part of the Keep Communities Flowing program, which focuses on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities. The $1.5 million will support projects and initiatives that further the company’s commitment to the environment, social and governance issues, as well as inclusion, diversity and equity.
The other organizations that received funding are in California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
