When it comes to holiday meals, the majority of people say they prefer side dishes to the main entrée, according to the Campbell Soup Co.

Ahead of Thanksgiving, the Camden-based brand unveiled its first-ever “State of the Sides” report, which takes a look at common holiday food trends in the U.S. this year.

Using consumer data from a nationwide survey, Campbell’s report found that stuffing is America’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish, followed by mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, and macaroni and cheese.

The report also revealed that 22 states prefer mashed potatoes while 27 prefer stuffing. Massachusetts had trouble taking a stance, making it the only state who was split down the middle.

Other findings:

  • Internet searches for holiday side dishes reach a peak between Nov. 20 and Nov. 22 and will remain high until the end of December.
  • Americans will not cut back when it comes to sides dishes on their holiday table, with 90% planning to serve the same number or more this season.
  • For this year’s side dishes, 54% said they’ll try new recipes this season.
  • The most common time to eat holiday meals is between noon – 3 p.m.

“The results are in, and Americans love the sides,” said Vice President of Marketing Gary Mazur. “Campbell’s has proudly shared its Green Bean Casserole each holiday season, but we’re excited to celebrate even more joy this season by introducing new side dishes recipes, from mashed potatoes to mac and cheese.”
