The closure will throw 230 workers out of their jobs.Supermarket chain A&P (The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., NYSE: GAP), based in Montvale, plans to close its Edison warehouse next month, laying off 230 workers, according to a letter recently obtained by The Record of Bergen County.
The letter from an A&P executive to the New Jersey Department of Labor, reported in Wednesday”s newspapers, outlines company plans to close the facility and let go its unionized work force.
A supermarket official told the media that A&P plans to use the nonunion C&S Wholesale Grocers to supply its stores in the region. Keene, New Hampshire-based C&S already supplies Pathmark and Stop & Shop stores in much of the Northeast. The shuttering of the Edison warehouse is part of several moves A&P has taken in past months to reverse a string of seven consecutive quarterly losses.
At the close of trading, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. shares were down $.38 to $25.13.
