Haddonfield-based Archer & Greiner P.C. announced Thursday that it will combine with the Hackensack law firm Herten, Burstein, Sheridan, Cevasco, Bottinelli, Litt & Harz LLC, effective May 2.
The resulting 201-attorney firm will have 165 lawyers in New Jersey, retains the Archer & Greiner moniker, and will be the state’s fifth-largest firm by number of New Jersey lawyers.
“For some time now, one of our goals was to establish a significant physical presence in northern New Jersey,” said Archer & Greiner partner and chairman James H. Carll. The firm has done business in North Jersey before, but having “feet on the ground” will enable it to do more, he added.
The negotiations with Herten, Burstein took about a year, and “about six months ago, both firms realized there was a good likelihood this would come through,” Carll said.
Archer & Greiner already does significant work in the litigation and environmental areas, and Carll said the firm would enhance Herten’s corporate tax and health care activity.
In turn, the Herten firm represents pharmaceutical companies in litigation matters, and “we would look to expand into that area,” he added.
Neither firm had to give up any clients as a result of the merger, and the Herten attorneys will remain in their Hackensack offices, Carll said.
