Ark Foods opened a 15,000-square-foot production facility in Hackensack where it will produce its variety of microwaveable veggie bowls and squash-based snacks.
The facility currently staffs 10 and, as production ramps up, has the capacity to staff up to 100 people.
The need for the plant was spurred by high demand with the growth of the plant-based foods category. The retail market for plant-based foods is worth nearly $4.5 billion, according to the Good Food Institute. Dollar sales of plant-based foods grew 11 percent in the past year and 31 percent over the past two years, compared to U.S. retail food dollar sales growth of 2 percent in the last year and 4 percent in the past two years, according to GFI.
Brooklyn-based Ark Foods released four products to market Tuesday, including Buffalo Cauli Mac, General Tso’s Cauli, Alfredo Veggie Spaghetti and Sesame Veggie Noodles. The brand has more than 15 SKUs overall.
Ark Foods products are sold at Whole Foods Markets and Kings Food Markets, with more retailers to follow.
