AtlantiCare chairman named to American Hospital Association board

The American Hospital Association announced on Thursday that it has elected Michael Charlton, chairman of AtlantiCare’s board of trustees, to its board.

Charlton is one of seven people the AHA elected to serve three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2020. The board of trustees is the organization’s top policymaking body and responsible for the governance and financial management. Charlton has served on the AHA’s Committee on Governance since 2017.

Charlton began his service at AtlantiCare as a trustee of the AtlantiCare Health Services board in 2009. He moved to the AtlantiCare System board in 2014, for which has served as chairman since 2017. He was appointed to the Geisinger Health board of directors in January 2019 and has served on the Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) board of directors since 2015.

“Michael has taken on the personal challenge of understanding the complex world of health care in order to improve the health of those we serve,” said Lori Herndon, AtlantiCare’s president and chief executive officer.

Charlton is president and CEO of ICON Hospitality, a restaurant, catering and construction business he built from a single pizzeria purchased in 1992.
