Barnes & Thornburg LLP has 22 offices worldwide, and now that includes in New Jersey.
The Indianapolis-based law firm announced the addition of Garden State and Philadelphia offices Sept. 6.
In New Jersey, Partners Michael Zogby and Jessica Brennan and Associate Kaitlyn Stone will lead the location, based at 55 Madison Ave. in Morristown, for now.
Barnes & Thornburg said the location is temporary, but that it is in lease negotiations for permanent space, which will still be located in North Jersey “based on the number of companies headquartered in the area, the access to airports, trains, highways and close proximity to New York and Pennsylvania.” Additionally, other Am Law 100 firms are based in the area and Barnes & Thornburg said that gives it direct access to its clients. The firm is hoping to make the move “as soon as possible.”
In addition to the three attorneys, the office includes administrative staff. Barnes & Thornburg told NJBIZ it’s planning to expand the team with associates and paralegals, as well as opportunities for lateral team recruiting.
According to the firm, both regional outposts will serve the life sciences, health care, consumer goods, global manufacturing and financial services sectors and multinational companies based in the area. New Jersey is, after all, the medicine chest of the world, which Barnes & Thornburg Managing Partner-elect Andrew Detherage acknowledged.
“New Jersey is recognized as the ‘medicine chest of the world’ for its world-renowned cluster of life sciences companies, while Philadelphia has long been one of the most attractive locations in the country for manufacturing, research and development, and international companies looking to establish operations in the states,” he said. “Given the importance of these markets to our life sciences and corporate clients, we’re thrilled to have this new team come on board to help us establish a first-rate presence in the region.”
The Philadelphia office will be led by Partners Chanda Miller and Molly Flynn and Associate Rebecca Trela.
The teams for both offices previously practiced and served in leadership roles in the Product Liability & Mass Tort and Health & Life Sciences groups at Am Law 50 law firm Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP. According to Barnes & Thornburg, the group has diverse trial and litigation experience representing global clients in complex product liability, mass tort, class actions, intellectual property, antitrust, trade secret and cross border disputes, in addition to deep experience in e-discovery matters. The team also appears regularly in state and federal courts throughout the U.S.
“I have known and worked alongside Barnes & Thornburg litigators for almost two decades, and have always been impressed with their track record and trial reputation, and the collegial nature of the firm,” said Zogby, who will serve as partner-in-charge of the New Jersey and Philadelphia offices. “We were attracted to the sophisticated nature and rapid growth of the firm’s health and life sciences practice, which boasts more than 200 practitioners located in leading life sciences and biotech hubs across the country. The firm’s platform is ideal for continuing to serve our clients at the highest level, and we look forward to collaborating with our new partners and colleagues.”
According to the firm, Detherage has led Barnes & Thornburg‘s strategic expansion. Over the past two years offices were added in Washington, D.C., and Delaware. In 2020 an outpost opened in New York. Additional life sciences-focused offices were established in Raleigh, Ann Arbor and Salt Lake City in 2019.
