Bayonne Medical Center said Thursday it opened a drive-thru screening center for COVID-19 at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Bayonne.
Dr. Vijay Singh, chief medical officer at Bayonne Medical Center, said the testing process was designed to keep patients and medical staff safe using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, and will be a convenient way for the hospital’s staff to screen people.
“Patients remain in their cars for the entire process. There is a very stringent screening process in effect before a person is scheduled for this drive-by testing. This is important to provide members of the community an opportunity to receive advice and reassurance from a medical professional,” said Singh.
Bayonne Medical Center has trained sufficient members from its clinical team to run the drive-by testing project for the community.
The test is being offered for patients referred from CarePoint Health Medical Group practices in Bayonne, Jersey City and Hoboken with prescription only.
“The second phase will involve testing our health care personal and first responders from Bayonne. The third and final phase of this process will allow us to start taking patients referred from community practices but with a prescription only,” said Singh.
This scaled up approach is being undertaken primarily due to a lack of testing kits and disruptions in the supply chain across the country.
Announcements on the timeline of each phase will be made in collaboration with the City of Bayonne.
“We are working closely with Mayor Davis on this project and would like to thank him and the city council for providing the necessary support to initiate this project for our community,” said Singh.
