BioNJ agrees with Christie that Rutgers-UMDNJ merger will be good for pharma business

BioNJ has declared its support for statements made by Gov. Chris Christie to radio station NJ 101.5 on the merger of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The merger, which officially occurred last summer, incorporated UMDNJ’s medical, nursing and dental schools under the state school’s network.

Christie stated in the NJ 101.5 report that the merger will continue to attract pharmaceutical companies, who may have fled as a result of the state’s high taxes, back to the state by creating a “one-stop” shop for both the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

“It’s one set of forms and one set of grant agreements and they’re done, so I think you’re going to see that help the pharma, keeping it here and even growing some of the smaller biotech firms here,” Christie told NJ 101.5.

BioNJ agreed with Christie’s prediction in its own statement.

“At BioNJ, we believe that the merger of Rutgers-UMDNJ will facilitate clinical trials and related activity,” the advocacy group said. “The Clinical Trials Master Service Agreement negotiated between BioNJ and Rutgers and endorsed by Rowan University, which BioNJ announced last year, will help facilitate exactly that sort of activity.”
