LeFrak Organization Chief Executive Officer Richard LeFrak and Simon Property Group CEO David Simon are giving a total of $100,000 to support the higher education needs of children whose parents were shot dead at a kosher deli in Jersey City. They are giving the money through the organization Newport.
Jeremy Farrell, senior director of development and community affairs at LeFrak Organization, told NJBIZ that money is going into two different funds to support the children of victims Mindy Ferencz, Douglas Miguel Rodriguez and Moshe Deutsch.
Two suspects shot the victims to death in an attack against the Jewish community on Dec. 10, 2019. The suspects were killed in a shoot-out with police after a stand-off that lasted for hours.
We felt it was important to make a contribution that would be there for them in the future because we know that when something horrific like this happens, there is a need for support in the long-term.
The funds are being given through the auspices of Rabbi Moshe Schapiro at the Jewish Center Beis Menachem.
The other money is being given to the children of Jersey City Detective Joseph Seals through the Police Officers Benevolent Association.
“We wanted to make a contribution to help support the children of the victims of the horrific event,” Farrell said. “Our contribution is to help provide for their future endeavors. We felt it was important to make a contribution that would be there for them in the future because we know that when something horrific like this happens, there is a need for support in the long-term.
“We also wanted to make this contribution because we feel strongly that we in Jersey City are one community,” he added. “And when something horrific happens to any one of us, it is being done to all of us. Now more than ever, it is important for us to come together and to be there for one another.”
