Checkpoint Systems Names New CEO

Van der Merwe succeeds George Off who will remain chairman of the company.Checkpoint Systems (NYSE: CKP), a Thorofare-based manufacturer and marketer of anti-theft products for the retail industry, says it named board member Robert van der Merwe as its new president and CEO. Van der Merwe, 55, succeeds George Off, 60, who will remain chairman of the company.

The appointment is effective immediately and is part of a succession plan developed by the company’s board of directors. Van der Merwe previously served as president and CEO of Paxar, a White Plains, NY-based maker of merchandising systems for retailers. Van der Merwe ran Paxar from 2005 until the firm’s sale to Avery Dennison Corp., an office products company based in Pasadena, Calif., in June.

Shares of Checkpoint were up $2.98 to $25.69 in Friday trading.
