Christie names Lougy as new acting attorney general

Andrew George//February 29, 2016

Gov. Chris Christie announced Monday that Robert Lougy, currently serving as the state’s first assistant attorney general, has been appointed to succeed outgoing acting Attorney General John Hoffman.Hoffman, who has served in the same capacity since June 2013, announced earlier this month that he will resign next month to become Rutgers University’s senior vice president and general counsel.

“Robert is one of the most dedicated public servants in my administration and I am proud to announce his appointment as acting attorney general,” said Christie. “Robert brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the office he will now lead. His knowledge and commitment to public service will be a tremendous asset to the people of New Jersey. I look forward to having him join my cabinet.”

Lougy will assume his acting role March 14. It is unclear if and when he’ll face a formal confirmation by the state Senate.

“I am deeply honored and humbled that Gov. Christie has appointed me to lead the Department of Law and Public Safety as acting attorney general,” said Lougy.  “I vow to advance the department’s great work, especially by building upon the important relationships of trust that we’ve developed with our community partners, law enforcement colleagues and stakeholders, and continuing to collaborate with them to make our cities and neighborhoods safer.”
