Source Brewing is honoring the late rapper Coolio with a new beer out Sept. 30 called “Phantastic Voyage,” a take on the 1994 hit song.
Earlier this week, the world learned of the tragic passing of the 59-year-old Grammy winner.
Greg Taylor, head brewer and director brewery operations, told NJBIZ this was a beer they were planning for months, which was just canned Tuesday and began distributing to wholesalers Wednesday before the news about Coolio’s death broke. It was produced at Source Brewing’s Farmhouse Brewery in Colts Neck.
Taylor called it an “unfortunate coincidence” that Coolio’s passing was so close to the official release of the beer today.
“The name for this brew was inspired by legendary American rapper and record producer, Coolio,” Source Brewing wrote on social media. “We just got word that Coolio (Artis Leon Ivey Jr.) passed away last night. This news saddens us and we are keeping his family and friends in our hearts and prayers. Rest in peace @Coolio, this beer is for you.”
Phantastic Voyage is an Imperial IPA with an 8% ABV that was dry hopped twice featuring an experimental trial hop blend recently developed by Yakima Chief Hops and Phantasm. The brewery noted the dry hop process was done using a potent blend of synergistic cryo hops and phantasm powder.
Source Brewing says that Phantastic Voyage is brewed for the connoisseurs of lupulin.
“The heady trendsetters on a noble, gustatory quest to experience all things novel and exciting along the frontier of the hop world, because, as Coolio put it, ‘you can’t have the hop if you don’t have the hip,’” they wrote on Instagram.
Source Brewing also says that people can expect a plume of intense, fruit-forward hop aromas followed by a mellow, medium body, and a juicy hop flavored finish, with notes of ripe honeydew melon, bright passion fruit, orange creamsicle, guava juice, gooey cantaloupe, zingy green grapes, floral arrangement, candied grapefruit, and sweet pine.
“Sure to hit your switches and have you ‘slide, slide slippity-sliding’ in for that next sip,” the brewery wrote on Instagram.

“So come along and ride on a Phantastic Voyage with us and indulge in the hippest new hop blend to hit the streets and palates of early adopter hop heads,” said Source Brewing on Instagram.
Taylor also noted that Source Brewing is donating a portion of the proceeds from the beer to a charity that Coolio was a big supporter, Music Saves Lives.
“We are big fans of Coolio here at Source and we want to send our condolences to his family and loved ones,” said Taylor in an email to NJBIZ.
