Coming Down The 2 billion Track

Biz BriefsNorfolk Southern Corp. plans to build a 1,400-mile rail corridor from Newark to New Orleans for freight trains. The Virginia-based company says the track will cost $2 billion to build and parallel Interstate 81 along the route. Calling the project the I-81 Crescent Corridor, Norfolk Southern says the freight line will make it possible to eliminate about 1 million truck trips a year from the highways.

The company is seeking funds from various state and federal sources to help pay for the project, which could begin construction next year and be completed by 2013.
