Dead-End Ideas for Transportation

Biz BriefsEverybody agrees the state’s cash-strapped Transportation Trust Fund, which pays for road, bridge and mass transit repairs, needs to be funded. How to do it is a massive point of contention. The latest proposal comes from Republican legislators. They say all of the state’s gas taxes, as well as “excess” money collected by the Motor Vehicle Commission, should be dedicated to the fund. That would raise nearly $700 million in new revenue, says state Senator Andrew R. Ciesla (R-Ocean), who is carrying the flag for the GOP on this one. Unfortunately, it would also require that voters approve a constitutional amendment. But to get one on the ballot, the plan would have to pass through a Legislature controlled by Democrats. u
