Developer wants to build hotel instead of condos to complete Wall site

A subsidiary of Amboy Bank has applied to build a new extended-stay hotel at site of a half-built condominium complex in Wall Township.In an announcement, AB Monmouth LLC said it’s proposing a hotel with 199 rooms to complete the property known as “The Monmouth.” The firm said it doesn’t require any variances for its application, and therefore expects approval to proceed with construction.

The complex at the intersection of Route 70 and Route 35 has remained unfinished since 2011, the news release said. It was designed by a previous developer as an age-restricted community of 4,000-square-foot luxury condos.

AB Monmouth cited an analysis that said the market doesn’t support additional condos of that size, the news release said. The bank subsidiary had previously proposed building “market-appropriate” 2,000-square-foot units to complete the site, but said it was rebuffed by the complex’s condo association.

Instead, the developer is seeking to build a hotel that it said will support the businesses in the area, visitors or individuals needing temporary lodging. The undeveloped portion of the site is zoned for commercial use only and permits such a project, the announcement said.
