An Edison maker of beauty and pharmaceutical products, along with a staffing company that provides it with workers, were cited by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration over a variety of hazards, OSHA said Tuesday.Bentley Laboratories LCC, located at 111 Fieldcrest Ave., was the subject of an investigation in October 2014 after a complaint. The OSHA investigation resulted in Bentley being cited for 14 serious violations, including failure to: train workers on chemical hazards; protect the hearing of workers exposed to excessive noise; control potentially hazardous energy; and protect from machine amputations.
In addition, Joule Clinical & Scientific Staffing Solutions, a Pittsburgh-based division of System One, was cited for three serious violations over a lack of communication and training programs tied to workplace hazards. Joule supplied temporary workers to Bentley Laboratories.
“We see these kinds of violations frequently, especially in the case of temporary workers,” Patricia Jones, director of OSHA’s Avenel Area Office, said in a prepared statement. “Both the hiring company and the staffing agency are legally responsible for the safety and health of their workers.”
OSHA proposed $45,000 in penalties for Bentley Laboratories and $8,000 in penalties for Joule.
The companies had 15 days from receipt of the citations to either accept or contest them, or request a meeting with the area director.
