Since April 2012, EMA said it has grown its client base from 19 emergency departments to 28 emergency departments in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island and increased its annual ED patient visits to nearly 1.4 million.
“It’s an exciting time in our history,” said Dr. Raymond Iannaccone, president and chief executive officer. “While we’ve expanded our footprint exponentially over the last year and half, we’ve continued to invest in our physicians, support staff and technology.”
The company’s New Jersey clients include Morristown Medical Center, the Capital Health Mercer satellite ED, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rahway and five hospitals in the Barnabas Health system.
EMA said it will attend the 2013 American College of Emergency Physicians meeting in Seattle, Oct. 14 to Oct. 17, where physicians who visit EMA’s booth will “learn first-hand why a great emergency medicine career is no longer just a myth.”
The company said its iPad recruiting application enables recruiters to match a physician’s geographic, lifestyle and facility preferences to the right career position.

EMA is a physician-owned medical practice that specializes in emergency, hospital and urgent care medicine.
Spokeswoman Jodi McCaffrey said EMA, which was founded 35 years ago, both handles the staffing and runs the day-to-day operations for its hospital ED clients. EMA staffs the EDs with physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. “It is more than just staffing: everything that happens in the ED is under our management,” she said. EMA works closely with the hospital nursing staff and provides the hospitals with analytics to monitor the ED.
She said EMA addresses such issues as making sure patients are being seen promptly, are getting the right care “and are not presenting the next day with the same ailment—that we got it right the first time.”
EMA has a clinical staff of more than 950 in four states, with a Parsippany team of about 100 support staff and 100 billing and coding employees.
“Due to the changing healthcare environment and the increasing utilization of emergency departments, hospitals are under pressure to optimize operations,” said David Calabrese, senior vice president of new business development .
He said the need for efficiency, innovation, emergency department-specific expertise and flexibility “leads many hospitals to outsource this service to proactively change the way emergency care is delivered.”
