Honeywell International Inc., in Morris Township, announced today that its Honeywell Technology Solutions arm, in Phoenix, was awarded a new six-year contract for the continued flight operations for Landsat 7. Financial terms were not disclosed. In an announcement, Honeywell said its mission and data management technologies have saved the U.S. Geological Survey, the managing organization of the Landsat satellites, $9 million over the past 12 years. Honeywell said it has extended the Landsat 5’s original three-year mission to 29 years, and kept the Landsat 7 operationally viable.

Landsat 5, which launched in March 1984, has provided more than 600,000 images of the world, from clear-cutting of rain forests, to aftereffects of the Chernobyl explosion, to before-and-after records of Hurricane Katrina’s impact. The technology also is used in online mapping products, according to the announcement.
