Folks who know exactly what happened four score and seven years ago — as in really know, to the word — might nab themselves a free lift ticket at Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon on Feb. 12, when the ski center honors President Abraham Lincoln’s 212th birthday by inviting guests to recite the Gettysburg Address.
Mountain Creek will grant lift tickets to those who can recite Lincoln’s 272-word speech correctly in its entirety. The ticket is valid for one day only, Feb. 12, to ski the resort’s four mountains and 167 acres of winter trails.
The tradition, popular with history buffs, goes back 14 or more years; and a Mountain Creek spokesman in 2019 told NJBIZ that usually between 10 and 15 people get it right.
The mountain has enjoyed some real snow in recent weeks. Hugh Reynolds, vice president of marketing and sales for SNOW Operating, which operates Mountain Creek along with Big SNOW in American Dream, told NJBIZ on Feb. 3 that the period has “been like holiday week all over again.”
Vernon had gotten 24 inches of snow during storm that day and according to its Instagram, it’s gotten “at least a couple more inches” since.
History buffs who think they can channel the 16th president can show up at the South and Vernon Base Guest Experience Counters to give the address a shot.
