JCPL slates 17 transmission projects for next six months

Jersey Central Power & Light said this week it will begin work on 17 transmission projects over the next six months as part of its multi-year $200 million Local Infrastructure and Transmission Enhancement program.

Jersey Central Power & Light said this week it will begin work on 17 transmission projects over the next six months as part of its multi-year $200 million Local Infrastructure and Transmission Enhancement program.

In a press release announcing the projects, JCP&L President Don Lynch said the plan will help meet growing customer demand for electricity.

“The work will involve adding redundant transmission lines and upgrading substation equipment to avoid possible overload conditions, particularly during the hot summer months when increased use of air conditioning has the potential to challenge our electrical system,” he said.

The LITE program began last year, and JCP&L said 24 projects have already been completed.

Several more projects are slated for completion this year in Monmouth, Sussex, Ocean, Somerset and Morris counties. Among them are plans to add backup protection to a transformer at a substation in the Whippany section of Hanover, upgrading an existing power line and adding a new 115-kilovolt line in Sussex County, and adding new breakers and a capacitor bank at the company’s Van Hiseville Substation, in Jackson, to increase its peak capacity.

Ron Morano, a company spokesman, said there should not be any power disruptions associated with the upgrades.

JCP&L serves 1.1 million customers in north and central New Jersey.
