Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Center in Edison has had no shortage of announcements lately. Its most recent, made March 20, is the launch of a Gastroesophageal Reflux and Motility Program to help patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease – or GERD – and other related disorders.
Dr. Annie Laurie Benzie, who specializes in advanced gastrointestinal surgery as well as minimally invasive robotic surgery, according to her hospital profile, will lead the program.
Benzie said GERD affects about 20% of adults in the U.S. While common, “it can compromise quality of life and have serious, long-term health consequences if not addressed and treated properly,” she said.
The two most common symptoms of GERD are heartburn and regurgitation, Benzie said. Other symptoms could include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, cough, laryngitis, dental erosions and asthma.
The goal of the new program is to use the medical center’s diagnostic tools to determine the causes of GERD symptoms and create a treatment plan, which may include lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, medication and surgery.
“Our program will provide essential support and services to patients in our local communities so they can manage GERD and live healthier lives,” Benzie added.
Additionally, Benzie will host a hybrid seminar titled “How to Manage Your GERD” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 4. Participants can attend virtually or in person at JFK University Medical Center Social Hall, 70 James St., Edison. Click here to register.
