The average daily U.S. equity trade volume in January 2006 was 1,047,000, up approximately 24.2% from 843,000 in December 2005, and up approximately 19.0% from 881,000 in January 2005.
The number of shares traded, while higher month-over-month, dropped from last year”s period. Average daily U.S. equity share volume was 3.39 billion in January 2006, up approximately 39.2% from 2.44 billion in December 2005, and down approximately 44.8% from 6.14 billion in January 2005.
For the month of January 2006, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.4%, the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 4.6% and the S&P 500 rose 2.5%.
Knight shares were up $0.28 to $12.35 at midday.
