It’s important to mark when our state leaders recognize a bad decision and are quick to react.

To the Editor:

It’s important to mark when our state leaders recognize a bad decision and are quick to react.

State lawmakers should be widely commended for vowing legislative action if the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control places new restrictions on the state’s craft breweries. Fortunately, the ABC has backed off its proposal (NJBIZ, Oct. 8, Page 11).

State lawmakers should put that same focus on other onerous legislation in place since 1963. It is an antiquated law that greatly restricts the amount of liquor licenses that supermarket chains can own.

Just as the ABC law is unfair to craft breweries, this law restricting supermarkets has stymied economic growth and job creation. There is a bill before the state Legislature, sponsored by Assemblyman Lou Greenwald, to finally expand the number of licenses a supermarket can have.

In this day and age, the supermarket industry must show its full support for New Jersey’s craft brewery community and blossoming Garden State wineries, but unfortunately can’t. These antiquated liquor laws in New Jersey restrict competition and consumer choice, slamming the door on prospering craft breweries and wineries in New Jersey to thrive on supermarket shelves.

Now is the ideal opportunity for our state lawmakers to step in — once again — and pass this bill, showing yet again that they are the true advocates for entrepreneurship, as well as New Jersey businesses and consumers that are the backbone of the state’s economy.
