Lockheed Martin gets 100 million contract with Navy

Global security and defense firm Lockheed Martin announced Tuesday it was awarded a five-year, $100 million contract from the U.S. Navy to provide engineering services to all ships equipped with the military’s Aegis combat system.Lockheed, in Bethesda, Md., said in an announcement the Aegis work will be performed at its Moorestown facility. The work will include design, development, integration, test and life cycle support for Aegis ships.
In a separate announcement, Gov. Chris Christie congratulated Lockheed Martin on its success in securing the contract. The company was approved for a $40 million Grow New Jersey grant in 2012 for new machinery and equipment, and modifications to the Lockheed facility, which employs about 4,000. A condition of the EDA award was Lockheed winning the Aegis contract.
Christie also said New Jersey is working with Lockheed Martin to create an advanced research technology and talent center, a partnership among the state, Lockheed Martin and the state’s higher education community. The center will enable academic researchers and Lockheed Martin’s technologists to collaborate in developing advanced technologies, training and educational experiences.
Lockheed Martin has partnered with the Navy for decades as the Aegis combat system engineering agent, and said it has evolved the system through nine technology baselines.
According to the Navy, Aegis-equipped ships can simultaneously attack land targets, submarines and surface ships, while automatically implementing defenses to protect the fleet against aircraft and missiles. More than 100 Aegis-equipped ships are in service around the globe.
