Lots of Larger Labs

Around the State-CentralPISCATAWAY Rutgers University dedicated a new $28 million life-sciences building on its Busch campus in Piscataway last week (see Interview on page 13). The 75,000-sq.-ft. facility will provide expanded laboratory and office space for the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials, the Human Genetics Institute and the university?s department of genetics.
The New Jersey Center for Biomaterials is actively involved in providing research advice and support to private companies interested in developing health care applications for biomaterials. A biomaterial is any synthetic substance used to replace natural body tissues such as arthritic joints, diseased heart valves or damaged skin. The center has 16 industrial members including Medtronic, C.R. Bard and several units of Johnson & Johnson.
The building took three years to build and was financed with state funds and proceeds from a Rutgers bond issue and the university?s capital campaign.
