In The NewsThere are cheers and high fives at Verizon now that long-distance carrier MCI has accepted its $8.5 billion takeover bid. But the deal?s impact on customers might not be as salutary, according to Control Point Solutions, a telecom-expense management firm in Rutherford.
It noted that telecom megamergers are concentrating phone service in just a few hands. The firm analyzed the $2.8 billion annual telecom bill of 51 of its major clients and estimated that 87% of their telecom dollars will go to what will be just two companies formed by the mergers of Verizon and MCI, and SBC and AT&T. Control Point says businesses can save money by distributing their telecom requirements across several vendors.
