Retail unions show strength in the latest NJBIZ ranking by membership

The Food and Commercial Workers Local Union 1202 maintained its hold on top spot in the NJBIZ list of New Jersey largest labor unions in 2020.
The union, which represents supermarket workers, boasts 34,719 members. The second-largest union, the Laborers Regional Organizing Committee, represents just over 31,000 construction, public sector and service workers. It also placed second in 2019.
Three other Food and Commercial Workers locals filled out the top five.
The Laborers Local Union 172 was the biggest gainer, rising six places from the 25th spot in 2019 to No. 19 in 2020. It represents heavy, highway and general construction workers.
Another retail union, the Food and Commercial Workers Local Union 888, turned in the biggest drop, slipping 12 spots from No. 12 to 24.
In all, seven of the top 25 unions in the state serve the building and construction industry, the largest number. Retail unions fill six spots, the second largest number.
The NJBIZ list is based on data from the U.S. Department of Labor. There is no charge to be included.
