Merck, the Whitehouse Station-based international pharmaceutical company, has donated a collection of laboratory equipment to Stevens Institute of Technology to establish a new biophysical chemistry laboratory within the biotechnology and drug discovery laboratory. The donation, consisting of both small and large equipment no longer being utilized by the company, has a valuation of more than $251,500. Had the equipment been purchased at its retail price, the value would exceed $600,000.
Items include fluorescence plate readers, a spectropolarimeter and isothermal titration calorimeter. According to Dr. Peter Tolias, professor and director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation at the Hoboken institution, these tools provide students with the capability to develop their biochemistry and biophysical chemistry expertise in enzyme kinetics and drug binding.
“This donation will give Stevens more competencies to train our students in more detailed aspects of drug discovery and development,” he said in a prepared statement. “Furthermore, the gift provides new resources for the faculty, and affords an opportunity to move forward with our drug discovery projects.”
