Merck Names President of Manufacturing Division

Willie A. Deese is currently senior vice president of global procurement for Merck.Whitehouse Station”s Merck (NYSE: MRK) Wednesday named Willie A. Deese as president of Merck Manufacturing Division.

Deese is currently the company”s senior vice president of global procurement. He will serve as a member of Merck”s management committee and will report to Chief Executive Officer and President Richard T. Clark.

Deese succeeds Clark, who was earlier this month appointed president and CEO following the resignation of Raymond V. Gilmartin.

Deese joined Merck in January 2004, after nearly three decades of experience as an executive and manager for several pharmaceutical, health care and high technology companies, including GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals; SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals; Kaiser Permanente and Digital Equipment.

He earned a B.A. in business administration from North Carolina A&T State University and an M.B.A. from Western New England College.

At the close of trading, Merck shares were down $0.20 to $32.54.
