Mobile gaming moves forward as regulations take effect

Atlantic City gamblers will soon be able to step away from the slots and continue placing bets, under state regulations allowing gaming on mobile devices that took effect Monday.The regulations will allow casino patrons to use devices issued by the casinos to continue gambling anywhere on the premises, but they will not be able to use the devices outside of the casinos.
“It’s a amenity that the patrons can avail themselves of, and in itself is not a game changer, but it’s part of our commitment that people traveling to Atlantic City will have a lot of choices and a lot of fun,” said Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli (D-West Deptford). Burzichelli sponsored the law that allowed the practice.
Division Director David Rebuck said the regulations provide safeguards to prevent underage gambling and ensure the integrity and security of mobile gaming.
“These regulations are another example of the cooperation of all our partners and use of our own imaginations to move past the prescribed technology,” Rebuck said in a statement.
Division spokeswoman Lisa Spengler said no casino has submitted a request to allow mobile gaming.
Burzichelli said he believes that casinos will be taking advantage of mobile gaming, noting that Revel, Borgata and the newly renovated Golden Nugget may be in the best technological position to act quickly.
Burzichelli said he would not link the introduction of in-casino mobile gaming with the more contentious issue of internet gaming, which he also supports. Burzichelli said he hopes that online gaming will be allowed in the state before the end of the year.
