NJBIZ Conversations: Bernie Holst

Jeffrey Kanige//October 18, 2021

For a family-owned company, Midland Park-based Horizon Pest Control has a wide reach. Horizon, which was founded 50 years ago, operates in 12 New Jersey counties, the five boroughs of New York City and Rockland County in New York. Despite the pandemic, the company recorded no staff attrition last year and is now projecting revenue to more than double over the next five years.

For this installment of NJBIZ Conversations, Editor Jeff Kanige spoke with Horizon CEO Bernie Holst on why he is confident about the company’s future, how it is changing its operations to meet new challenges and how he sees the business climate evolving over the next several months.

“I am hopeful, and I know that there’s new variants coming out — you hear about them and we don’t know how well the vaccines are going to work against some of the newer ones,” he said. “But I think we know enough now that you don’t have to take as drastic measures, as we did, initially, not knowing anything about it. As long as the powers that be, you know the the federal government local governments, use what we’ve learned already I think we can mitigate any kind of blip and increase lot better than we did initially by just shutting everything off.”
