Biz BriefsHolmdel-based Vonage Holdings, the nationÂs leading provider of Internet-based telephone service, acquired three patents from Digital Packet Licensing for technology that helps support the transmission of voice calls over the Web. Financial terms were not disclosed for the patents that cover the compression of digital signals commonly used in VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, Vonage said.
Vonage and its rivals, including Verizon and a subsidiary of Sprint-Nextel, have been engaged in lawsuits over VonageÂs alleged infringements. In June, Verizon charged that Vonage had violated at least seven of its patents on technology for making voice calls over the Internet. VonageÂs acquisition of the new patents last week could improve its position in those suits.
