Judith Persichilli, acting president and chief executive officer of University Hospital in Newark since last December, will be named state health commissioner, according to sources.
Persichilli will replace current commissioner Shereef Elnahal who will take over as president and CEO of University Hospital on July 22.
Persichilli, a veteran health care executive, was named to the top spot at University Hospital by the board of directors after it released a report by Persichilli calling for a transformational leader and new vision at the hospital.
The hospital’s former president and CEO, John Kastanis, stepped down in December amid controversy over the deaths of three premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.
University Hospital is the Level 1 Trauma Center and a principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. It has 519 licensed beds and an active medical staff of more than 525. It offers specialty programs including the Center for Liver Diseases and the Comprehensive Stroke Center.
