Atkins Companies and its joint venture partner Woodmont Properties said March 16 that Mid Atlantic Retina will join the roster of national and regional specialty health care tenants at Washington Square Town Center. Mid Atlantic Retina signed a lease for 5,400 square feet of space at a 10,000-square-foot standalone retail building at the highly sought-after mixed-use community in Gloucester County and plans to open the new location in late Spring 2021.
With over 20 locations across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, Mid Atlantic Retina is considered a premier retinal specialty care network. Its physicians are internationally recognized and are the exclusive retina surgeons at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn, perennially ranked as one of the top two eye hospitals in the United States. In addition to its offices across the region, Mid Atlantic Retina leads in research development, with four research centers.
The lease with Mid Atlantic Retina continues to solidify Washington Square Town Center’s status as a hub for growing Philadelphia and southern New Jersey-based health care networks. Spread across 35 acres, the mixed-use community features 330 residential apartments, 100 townhomes, an assisted living facility as well as a 40,000-square-foot Class-A medical office building and 30,000 square feet of ground-level retail space. Completed in 2018, the community’s state-of-the-art medical office building is currently home to Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, The Heart House cardiology group, Jefferson Health Outpatient Imaging, and Advocare OB/GYN.
Additionally, Atkins and Woodmont recognized the tremendous unmet demand in the local market for medical office space and converted one of the three planned 10,000-square-foot retail buildings to medical use. Shortly thereafter, Atkins negotiated a lease for 7,000 square feet at the building with Axia Women’s Health.
In addition to its slate of health care tenants, the property has also attracted a diverse blend of traditional retail tenants such as Bison Coffee Company, Strive Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation, PetCheck Animal Urgent Care, and Lavish Nails & Spa.
“The ongoing shift of health care delivery from an inpatient, hospital-centric model to an outpatient, community-focused system continues to create strong demand from health care users for both purpose-built medical office space and well-located retail spaces across our region,” said Bob Atkins, managing partner of Atkins Companies. “By locating these types of spaces directly in a mixed-use, multigenerational community as we have done at Washington Square Town Center, we have created a tremendous opportunity for health care systems and physician practices to strategically grow their regional footprints and increase access to care for the populations they serve. This latest lease showcases the continued strength of this type of project and we welcome Mid Atlantic Retina to our growing community.”
