Port Authority gets 167M federal grant for post-Sandy PATH work

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced last week that it has received an additional $167 million in federal funding for post-Superstorm Sandy work on the PATH rail system.Provided through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the aid is part of a $1.3 billion recovery fund already set aside for PATH to work on Sandy-related damage to tunnels, rails, cables and other equipment.

Port Authority Deputy Executive Director Dceb Gramicioni, a recent appointee of Gov. Chris Christie’s, called the grant “another example of the federal government keeping its pledge to help the region recover from Sandy.”

“The FTA recognizes PATH’s critical role in moving roughly a quarter-million people daily between New Jersey and New York as a vital component of the region’s economy,” Gramiccioni said.

The agency says grant funding already has helped to fund the removal of salt residue within the system’s rail tunnels left by the storm’s floods. Future funds also will go towards implementing resiliency measures and purchasing items such as flatcars, power washers and high-capacity pumps, the agency said.

Weekend work on PATH tunnels has been ongoing and will continue through the end of the year, closing the World Trade Center and Exchange Place stations late Friday nights until early in the morning Mondays.
