The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has selected construction companies Tutor Perini Corp. and Parsons Transportation Group, both based in California, to design and construct a new $2.3 billion terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The 1 million-square foot, 33-gate domestic terminal will have sufficient flexibility in design to grow and change as air travel advances, officials said Friday. The Terminal One Redevelopment program also will provide a more efficient roadway network and create parking for about 3,000 vehicles.

PANYNJ previously approved the spending of $250 million on a $175 million project to pave 40 airside acres to create needed aircraft parking positions and a $75 million project for foundation work on new terminal frontage to accommodate a future AirTrain alignment.

Another move in December greenlighted an $8 million feasibility study of consolidating rental car facilities to centralize operations of all rental agencies serving the airport, as well as the design and construction of a new 3,000-space public parking garage that would help serve Terminal One and could be integrated into a consolidated rental-car facility.

“There has been a continuous surge in the number of passengers at Newark Liberty, which last year welcomed more than 40 million of them,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole in a prepared statement.
