Princeton University has established a new center for statistics and machine learning, the school announced Tuesday. The new center will be headed by John Storey, a professor of molecular biology.
The center will offer graduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as act as a cornerstone for research in the field, which focuses on understanding data analysis tools.
“Given the growing importance and prominence of machine learning and statistics in both industry and academia, it is crucial for Princeton undergraduates to have access to a first-rate education in these areas,” Storey said in a statement. “The interest from students here has gone up tremendously. They’re living in this data-rich world.”
According to a 2013 study, 90 percent of all data collected in the world has been generated in the last two years.
The center expands upon a certificate the university offered in statistics and machine learning during the 2013-14 year.
