Biz BriefsCandy and snack maker Mars in Hackettstown wants the world to know that itÂs really a vendor of health foods. Mars, whose products include candy bars like Snickers and Twix, is touting new research from Harvard Medical School physician Norman Hollenberg that suggests flavanol-rich cocoa and dark chocolate may help fend off cancer and cardiovascular disease. Hollenberg presented his findings at the National Academies in Washington, D.C., last week for the gathered scientists to examine.
Flavanol is a nutrient found in fruits, vegetables and chocolate. Cocoa beverages with flavanol have previously been given credit for reversing some of the detrimental affects of smoking on blood vessels.
