Revel casino to close earlier than planned

Revel Casino Hotel will close Sept. 2, the gaming hall’s parent company said Friday. The operator, Revel AC Inc., said earlier this week it would close the cash-strapped casino by Sept. 10. But an announcement Friday said Revel’s hotel will shut down at 11 a.m. Monday, while its casino will close 5 a.m Tuesday.

The announcement noted all concerts and events scheduled prior to Sept. 2 will go on as planned, while all concerts and events scheduled for that date or later will be canceled.

Revel has failed to turn a profit since opening two years ago in Atlantic City, despite hopes that it would change the fortunes of the resort town. The $2.4 billion megaresort, which is in its second round of bankruptcy proceedings, failed to attract a qualified buyer ahead of an auction scheduled for this past Thursday.

Trump Plaza and Showboat are also planning to close at the end of the summer, meaning four of the state’s gaming halls will have shut down this year. Atlantic Club closed in January.

Revel’s closing will put more than 3,000 people out of work.
