Rutgers-Newark granted 3.5M to expand STEM program

Rutgers-Newark has received a $3.5 million grant to support its efforts in increasing the representation of minorities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.The grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency, and will fund the Garden State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Phase II, or GS-LSAMP II, from July 2014 until June 2019.

GS-LSAMP II will expand on the first phase of GS-LSAMP, which was successful in surpassing its goal of doubling the minorities receiving a bachelor’s degree in STEM subjects, with roughly 2,000 students completing the program since 2009.

The program includes five county colleges (Bergen Community College, Hudson County Community College, Middlesex County College, Passaic County Community College and Union County College) that are working to create a stream of STEM students into four-year institutions.
