Smiths Detection to Supply Amtrak with Explosives Detection Systems

Smiths Detection is a division of London-based technology company Smiths Group.

The company said its hand-held detection system is capable of quickly detecting and identifying explosives , as well as narcotics, chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. Amtrak will utilize only the explosives detection capabilities of the system, Smiths Detection said.

Smiths Detection said its system’s ability to detect explosives in 10 seconds, with a complete analysis in 20 seconds, enables the screening process to be completed in a minute. In addition, with the dual sample collection capability, the system can be used to collect and review both swabs and vapor samples, the company said.
