New Jersey received a C- overall score from Thumbtack, an improvement from last year’s rating of D , thanks to small improvements in several categories. The state ranked 44 out of 50.
The biggest improvements from 2016 came from the specific ratings on how friendly health and safety and zoning regulations are to businesses. In 2017, the state was rated B for health and safety, up from a D , and C- in zoning, up from an F the previous year.
New Jersey’s closest competing states, New York and Pennsylvania, also received dubious scores with a D and C- respectively.
Thumbtack compiles information on states’ business friendliness by surveying 13,000 small business owners across the country about various topics such as tax codes, licensing, ease of starting a business and other issues related to business.
