The legislation keeps in place 14 separate executive orders signed since the onset of the pandemic, keeping in effect a variety of powers granted to Gov. Phil Murphy including regarding moratoriums for evictions and utility shut-offs, hospital data-sharing on COVID-19 numbers, face-covering mandates, heightened workplace safety standards, and vaccines.

Almost 28% of non-retired adult Americans have no retirement savings or pension and finances continue to be the number one cause of stress in this country. In response, a number of states, including New Jersey, have decided to take matters into their own hands by enacting legislation that requires most employers to offer employees access to a payroll deducted retirement program. Under a newly signed bill, income from the federal Paycheck Protection Program will not be used to calculate how much in taxes a business owes to the state.

“We want to get New Jersey on the right track to a new normal and to do that we need to ensure that all New Jerseyans who want to receive the COVID-19 [vaccination] have access to it,” reads a statement from the sponsor of the legislation, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, D-37th District.

An increase approved by the Port Authority in 2018 pushed many employees out of Medicaid eligibility prompting this legislation, which Gov. Phil Murphy estimated could affect more than 10,000 workers at Newark airport, whose jobs include baggage claim, wheelchair attendants, security, passenger verification agents and retail workers.

The legislation comes in response to complaints from residents around the state that the industrial depots have choked local traffic, such as an Amazon mega-warehouse in Robbinsville.

A bill signed into law this week directs $10 million in CARES Act funding to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, which will then be distributed to seven organizations throughout the state.

Spouses of “essential workers” who contracted and died from the virus will be entitled to expanded assistance under a measure Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law.
