New Jersey American Water launched its second annual training program — a paid, 11-week workforce development initiative that offers water utility and other business training for adults interested in a career in the industry.
Dubbed Water UP! (Water Utility Pipeline) and created in partnership with APEX Solutions Group, the training is available for adults from traditionally underserved areas and teaches utility-specific skill sets, such as customer service, administrative and OSHA 30 certification.

The second class is made up of 15 adults, most of them from Plainfield, who were selected through an application and interview process. The hands-on training takes place at the utility’s Plainfield Operations Center.
Upon completion of the program, participants will be qualified for positions within New Jersey American Water and with industry partners.
“It’s important for the future of our company and the water utility industry to not only invest in our technology and infrastructure, but also in the talent behind it,” Mark McDonough, president of New Jersey American Water, said in a statement.
McDonough added that the goal of the program “is to inspire a new generation of qualified and diverse water utility workers and create a path to employment with our company, as well as a lifelong career in this essential and rewarding industry.”
The inaugural Water UP! program took place in Camden and Delran in 2021. All eight of the graduates received full-time employment offers, four of them with New Jersey American Water. Learn more about the workforce programs here.
