Triple Play is a weekly NJBIZ feature that asks top executives in New Jersey to talk about three things related to their industry.
Cheryl Biron is the president and CEO of One Horn Transportation, a shipping company that is one of the fastest-growing woman-owned companies in New Jersey.
We asked for three things she’d tell a woman going into a male-dominated industry.
Have a thick skin. Men will say some really harsh things that may rattle you or hurt your feelings (often unintentionally); take it in stride and don’t let it show.
Be open to participating in traditionally male activities. Learn to golf, be aware of sports team performances, etc. It is important not to separate yourself from men where they bond after work. That is where many strong relationships are built.
Don’t hold grudges. Men can argue about a business issue and then go out for a beer together five minutes later; women tend to hold grudges. It is important to forgive, forget and move forward to achieve your business objective.
