United Airlines is seeking federal approval to begin offering regularly scheduled direct service to Havana from Newark and Houston, according to a New York Times report. The move comes after President Barack Obama recently announced a foreign policy shift on Cuba, where Americans have been largely restricted from traveling for over five decades as part of an economic embargo on the communist Caribbean island.
While restrictions will be eased, Americans hoping to travel to Cuba will still have to seek permission in order to do so and must have a qualified purpose for their trip, such as visiting family or business development.
Visitors will also be required to obtain a travel visa from the Cuban government, according to the Times report.
Up until now, major American carriers have only offered charter service to Havana from points in Florida, the Times reports.
