Princeton University ranked first among national universities out of nearly 1,400 schools, according to the 2020 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings released Monday.
In the category of Best Value Schools, the New Jersey Institute of Technology ranked 41st, Rutgers University-Newark ranked 104th, the Stevens Institute of Technology ranked 107th, and Rutgers University-New Brunswick ranked 122nd.
U.S. News added a new ranking of top performers on social mobility to evaluate which schools best serve underrepresented students. U.S. News uses Pell Grants as a proxy measure and looks at enrollment and graduation rates of low-income students. Rutgers University ranked fourth in this category.
To calculate the top schools, U.S. News focuses on academic quality and places emphasis on outcome measures, including graduation rates, retention rates and social mobility. Outcomes are the most highly weighted ranking factor, contributing 35 percent to each school’s overall score.
