Toys R Us, once a phoenix risen from its own ashes, has fallen once again as parent company Tru Kids Brands shuttered the two U.S. locations it opened in 2019 as a comeback effort.

The Houston store in the Galleria Mall closed on Jan. 15. The Paramus store in the Garden State Plaza closed on Jan. 26.

“As a result of COVID, we made the strategic decision to pivot our store strategy to new locations and platforms that have better traffic,” said a Tru Kids spokesperson.

“Consumer demand in the toy category and for Toys”R”Us remains strong and we will continue to invest in the channels where the customer wants to experience our brand,” she said.

The spokesperson said that the company operates more than 700 Toys R Us and Babies R Us branded stores and e-commerce sites in more than 25 countries across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The Toys R Us website is still live, sold, shipped, and fulfilled through Amazon.
